Open Source Alternative to iTunes Launched

For all you haters out there you now have another option. Songbird is an open-source alternative to iTunes. However, since the iTunes software itself is free Songbird's going to need to have some better features to draw most users to their product. One notable advantage is that Songbird's music store searches many existing music stores (i.e. eMusic, etc.) which may provide users with better access to more songs. If you're interested check it out. However, the interface doesn't look that different from iTunes so if you hate iTunes altogether Songbird may not be enough of a departure to interest you.

New Music Store Has You Sing to Identify Songs

This new online music store offers a unique feature: sing into a mic (or your computer's built-in mic) to indentify a song. Maybe you don't know the title/artist, or perhaps you don't even know the words... no problem, hum the tune and search the database. It also allows you to plug in your keyboard or digital piano and play the melody to search. I thought it was a cool idea (although I haven't tested out yet to see if it actually works). You can then buy the song for 99 cents. I think you can also make your own karaoke recordings too right on the site.

Highlander - The Source

Highlander fans have something new to look forward to. A new trilogy starring Adrian Paul as Duncan MacCleod will follow an almost "Fellowship-of-the-Ring" inspired quest where Duncan and his friends (including watcher Joe Dawson and immortal Methos) seek to discover the "holy grail" of their world (i.e. the origins of the first immortal).

This trilogy could be really interesting. One of the biggest unanswered questions in the world of Highlander is why and how these immortals exist. If the film(s) are well written, acted and directed they could be some of the greatest Highlander material out there. However, I personally worry about the fact that End Game, which could've been great, "ended" up feeling awkward and unnatural. My biggest issue with End Game wasn't the story itself, but the fact that the character of Duncan wasn't consistent with the six seasons of the television series. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this new project won't suffer the same mistake. Adrian Paul is the executive producer (for whatever that's worth).

The first film is called Highlander: The Source and is supposed to be released in 2007. You can see a bit of the opening at the trilogy's web site (see link below). I'll probably see all three, but I'll only be satisfied with my ticket purchases if the film is more true to the television series than End Game was.
